Address of Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Oleksandr Turchynov on the occasion of the anniversary of the Chornobyl tragedy
Today is the anniversary of the Chernobyl tragedy. Over thirty years have passed since the time of the biggest nuclear catastrophe of a planetary scale. One way or another, the Chernobyl disaster has affected millions of our compatriots, has led to severe environmental, socio-economic and medical consequences not only for Ukraine but also for Europe as a whole. We feel its fatal echoes up to now. We have to do everything to overcome this universal tragedy.
Decades have passed, but the time has not erased in the memory of millions of people the feat of military servicemen, firefighters, builders, nuclear engineers, design engineers, and thousands of volunteers. Liquidators who voluntarily went to death in peacetime became a symbol of courage and sacrifice in the name of preserving the present and future generations.
Let us remember their immortal feat!
